It took two pieces of typing paper, scotchtaped together, to have enough room to lay the lever down & get the accurate drawing. To insure accuracy, I made an accurate drawing of what I wanted with the stock shape & where I wanted the bends & what the lever should look like, when done. I took my lever to a tube bending shop, here in Phoenix, & they charged me $14.00 for the two bends. Most probably, you will have to address that problem. The lever is a straight stick & you will have no way of knowing which way to bend the lever, otherwise.Īlso, expect to have the powdercoating pop off during the bending process. MAKE SURE you mark the positioning of the lever on the transmission shaft before you loosen the lever to remove it. This will help you avoid having the lever come in contact with the ashtray, when it's open.īasically, you will be moving the lever (on top, at the knob) 2-1/2" closer to you. The second bend is between 11" & 11-1/2" above the bottom of the lever. Between the 4-3/4" & 5-1/4" is where you want to place your first bend. If you pull your shift lever out & measure 4-3/4" up from the bottom of the nut on the lever, you will notice that is where the "bulbous area" tapers down to a straight lever tube. I did it more for looks & to have something a bit different. It's nothing dramatic but, it is a bit more comfortable, than stock. I'm happy with the final results & it wasn't too expensive, either.īending your shift lever will not make things that much more comfortable. That way, I new where the bends needed to go & in which direction to do the bends. I marked the nut at the bottom of the lever when it was tight on the trans shaft. When doing this, be careful with your measurements so the lever does not interfere with the ash tray door, when opened.Īlso, the base of the shift lever screws onto a shaft coming out of the trans. They followed the drawing & it worked, perfectly, other than the powdercoating on the shift lever popped off at the bends. I made a life-sized drawing of how I wanted the shifter to look like & took it to a tube bending shop. On the TDR, there is a guy named "Whiplash" that bends the shift levers with two bends. I bought a 1.5mm, 10 tap & "chased" or re-tapped the knob & it worked beautifully. Close but, it would not screw on, completely. However, the threads were a bit different. Speed Shop, I found exactly what I had been looking for. I always liked the old-style, oval-shaped shift knobs found in the 50's, 60's & early 70's trucks.Īt So.
